A rating system for oyster purification. Hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) application to purification of live oysters ArchiMer
Bird, P.
A Critical Hazard Analysis Rating (CHAR) based on the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) concept is used to monitor oyster purification in New South Wales (N.S.W.), Australia. Critical areas for assessment include oyster condition, separation of raw and treated oysters, water quality (turbidity, salinity, temperature, aeration, circulation), purification period, flow rate, steriliser efficiency and tank hydraulics. Batch records and product identification are included. Purification supplements a total management program for producing safe oysters. The rating can also be used to endorse oysters produced under industry self-regulatory, quality assurance programs. The four main CHAR areas are operational standards, quality assurance, public health...

Boudry, Pierre; Naciri, Yamama; Collet, Bertrand; Cornette, Florence; Heurtebise, Serge; Ledu, Christophe; Chollet, Bruno; Phelipot, Pascal; Gerard, Andre.

Diseases of cultured molluscs in Australia ArchiMer
Lester, R.
Three mollusc species are cultured commercially in Australian tropical and warm temperate waters: the Sydney rock oyster Saccostrea commercialis , the pearl rock oyster is susceptible to two protozoans: Marteilia sydneyi , which is the cause of QX Disease and infects oysters during the summer; and Mikrocytos roughleyi which is associated with winter mortality. It also harbours mudworm, Polydora websteri a parasite farmers try to avoid by growing oysters on racks. Transported pearl oysters Pinctada maxima die with heavy infections of Vibrio harveyi . Cultured giant clams Tridacna gigas are pestered by pyramidellid snails and some carry Perkinsus sp., a protozoan common in reef bivalves. Deaths in mollusc hatcheries have been associated with Vibrio tubiashi...

Ressources génétiques chez les huîtres creuses : conservatoire de souche et marqueurs moléculaires ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Heurtebise, Serge; Collet, Bertrand; Cornette, Florence; Ledu, Christophe; Phelipot, Pascal; Gerard, Andre.
The cupped oyster strain bank was created at Ifremer at La Tremblade in 1992. It was funded by the Poitou-Charentes regional council. Its goals were: 1. to study the intra- and interspecific genetic differentiation within the genus Crassostrea. 2. to study acclimatization potential of foreign oysters in French waters in order to identify species that could replace Crassostrea gigas in case of a major disease outbreak in C. gigas or in case of a need or desire to diversify shellfish production. 3. to study the possibility of interspecific hybridisation in the genus Crassostrea and hybrid performance.

The Australian mariculture industry: Finfish, molluscs and crustaceans. ArchiMer
Baker, J; Kenway, M.
Australia's interest in mariculture has been comparatively recent when compared with the developments in many other Pacific countries. Two exceptions are native oysters, cultivated for food since the late 1880's, and pearl oysters which have been cultured, particularly in the northern part of Australia, following the initial work of Saville-Kent.
